Welcome to Year 6!

We have an exciting and busy year ahead, filled with new challenges, memorable experiences, and opportunities to shine. As the oldest pupils in the school, Year 6 is an important and rewarding year, with children developing their independence, leadership, and confidence as they prepare for the transition to secondary school. This page will give you an overview of what we'll be learning across the different subjects so you can share in your child's learning journey.

English

In Year 6, we are working hard to become confident, thoughtful readers and skilled writers. This year, we will be studying the award-winning novel Holes by Louis Sachar, using it to develop our reading comprehension, explore characters and themes, and discuss the author's use of language and literary techniques. The novel will also provide the inspiration for a range of engaging writing opportunities across different genres. Throughout the year, pupils will plan, draft, edit, and refine their work, focusing on ambitious vocabulary, varied sentence structures, and accurate grammar and punctuation. Regular spelling practice will help children apply spelling rules and patterns confidently in their independent writing as they work towards meeting the end of Key Stage 2 expectations.

Mathematics

Our mathematics lessons will consolidate key concepts from across the primary curriculum while developing confidence in fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving. Children will strengthen their understanding of number, the four operations, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, algebra, geometry, statistics, and measures. Lessons will encourage pupils to explain their mathematical thinking, apply their knowledge in a range of contexts, and tackle increasingly complex problems. Rapid and accurate recall of multiplication facts remains an important skill, supporting success across all areas of mathematics.

Science – Electricity

This half term, children will explore the fascinating topic of Electricity. They will learn how electrical circuits work by identifying and using components such as cells, wires, bulbs, buzzers, motors, and switches. Through practical investigations, pupils will build and test their own circuits, exploring how changing different components affects how a circuit functions. They will also learn to represent circuits using recognised symbols and develop their scientific enquiry skills by making predictions, carrying out fair tests, recording results, and drawing conclusions from their findings.

Geography – Climate and Weather

This half term, children will explore the difference between weather and climate, developing an understanding of how weather patterns vary across the world and how climate is influenced by factors such as latitude and altitude. They will investigate the Earth's major climate zones, learn how meteorologists measure and forecast the weather, and consider the impacts of climate change on people and the environment. Through a range of enquiry-based activities, pupils will develop their geographical skills by interpreting maps, graphs, and climate data while exploring how weather and climate shape the world around us.

PE

This half term, children will continue to develop their physical skills, teamwork, and confidence through a range of exciting sporting activities.

Oak Class

• Basketball – Children will develop their passing, dribbling, shooting, and defending skills while learning how to work effectively as part of a team. They will build their understanding of tactics and apply these in small-sided games.
• Swimming – Pupils will continue to develop their water confidence and swimming technique, working towards improving their stroke efficiency, stamina, and water safety knowledge.

Redwood Class

• Basketball – Children will build their fundamental basketball skills, including ball control, passing, shooting, and teamwork, while developing an understanding of attacking and defending strategies.
• Dance – Pupils will explore movement, rhythm, and expression through dance. They will create and perform sequences, developing coordination, creativity, and confidence while working individually and collaboratively.

Music – Music and Technology

This half term, children will explore the relationship between music and technology, developing their understanding of how digital tools can be used to create, edit, and perform music. They will experiment with different forms of digital composition, exploring how technology can be used to manipulate sounds, create musical ideas, and enhance performances. Alongside this, pupils will continue to develop their listening and appraising skills, identifying key musical features such as rhythm, melody, texture, and dynamics. They will also continue building confidence in composition, notation, and performance.

Art – Architecture

This half term, children will explore the theme of Architecture, investigating how buildings are designed and how architects use creativity, structure, and materials to bring their ideas to life. They will study a range of architectural styles and influential architects, exploring how buildings can reflect culture, history, and the environment. Through drawing, design, and practical activities, pupils will develop their skills in perspective, shape, form, and composition. They will experiment with different techniques to create their own architectural designs, considering both the function and appearance of their structures.

Computing – Networks and The Internet

This half term, children will explore the topic of Networks and The Internet, developing their understanding of how computers and devices connect and communicate with each other. They will learn about the role of networks, including the internet, and explore how data is transferred between devices around the world. Pupils will investigate the different components that make up a network and consider how information is shared securely and responsibly. They will also develop their understanding of online safety, including how to use technology effectively and make informed choices in a digital world.

PSHE – Leaning Out of Windows

This half term, children will explore the theme “Leaning Out of Windows”, focusing on growing independence, managing risks, and making safe and responsible choices. Through discussion and reflection, pupils will consider different situations they may encounter as they get older and develop their understanding of how to assess risks, seek support, and look after themselves and others.

Children will also explore the importance of resilience, confidence, and making positive decisions as they prepare for the next stage of their journey, including the transition to secondary school.

RE – What Do People Believe About God?

This half term, children will explore the question “What do people believe about God?” They will investigate how different religions understand and describe God, exploring a range of beliefs, teachings, and traditions. Pupils will consider how ideas about God are expressed through sacred texts, symbols, worship, and the lives of believers. Through discussion and reflection, children will develop their understanding of different worldviews, while considering how beliefs can shape the way people understand themselves, others, and the world around them.

Modern Foreign Languages – Me in the World

This half term, children will continue to develop their French language skills through the theme “Me in the World.” They will learn and use vocabulary linked to themselves, their interests, family, and the wider world around them. Pupils will practise speaking, listening, reading, and writing in French, developing their confidence in forming sentences and expressing their ideas.

Through a range of activities, children will continue to build their vocabulary, improve their pronunciation, and apply their language skills in meaningful conversations and written tasks.
