Year 4 - Poplar

Welcome to Poplar Class!

We have an action-packed Summer Term ahead as we explore inspiring new topics, strengthen our skills and work together as a team. This page lets you see an overview of the exciting things we will be learning in each subject, so you can share in your child's educational journey.

Here is a little look at what we will be studying over the coming weeks...

English

In Year 4, we will continue to build a love of reading and writing through a wide range of engaging texts and creative activities. Children will develop their reading fluency and comprehension skills by exploring stories, poems and information texts, discussing characters, themes and vocabulary. In writing, children will learn to plan, draft and edit their work, using imaginative ideas and developing understanding of grammar, spelling and punctuation. Our Year 4 pupils will continue developing clear, fluent handwriting by practising consistent letter formation, joining techniques and presentation skills to support their overall writing confidence.

Maths

In Maths, we will be strengthening our number skills and building confidence in key areas. This half term, children will be continuing to develop their mental multiplication and division strategies, as well as learning written methods for multiplication and division. Children will also cement their understanding of place value, as well as looking at using addition and subtraction in statistics. Throughout our lessons, we will have a focus on the times tables to prepare for the multiplication check towards the end of Year 4.

Science

This half term we will explore electricity, learning how it flows, how circuits work and how to use different components safely. Children will develop their scientific skills by investigating, observing and recording their findings.

Geography

This half term in Geography, we will be learning about earthquakes and volcanoes. Children will explore how and why these natural events occur, their impact on people and the environment, and the locations most at risk, using maps, data and a range of sources to investigate and understand the world around them.

Music

This half term in Music, children will be exploring the song Blackbird by the Beatles, considering its meaning and musical features. They will develop their understanding of the language of music while learning to sing, play and perform through a range of engaging activities.

French

This half term in French, children will be learning vocabulary for clothes. They will practise speaking in sentences, asking and answering questions, and describing what they and others are wearing, all while beginning to write simple phrases from memory and exploring the sounds and patterns of French through songs, rhymes and engaging activities.

Art

In our Art lessons this term, children will explore the theme Every Picture Tells a Story, focusing on the work of David Hockney and Edward Hopper. They will develop their art and design skills through observation, drawing and creativity, while learning how artists use images to convey mood, narrative and meaning.

Computing

In Computing this term, children will be learning about HTML and how it is used to create web pages. They will explore how to plan, write, and edit simple code to build their own pages, and develop their skills in presenting and evaluating digital content.

PE

On Tuesdays:

  • Athletics - children will develop their athletics skills through running, jumping and throwing activities, improving their coordination and technique.

On Thursdays:

  • Dance with Mr Glenn - children will develop their coordination, rhythm and creativity.

RE

In RE, we will be considering the question: Why do some people think that life is like a journey and what significant experiences mark this? The children will explore different beliefs and teachings about life’s journey and reflect on the important experiences that shape people’s lives.

PSHE

In PSHE, we will be learning about feelings and emotions. Children will explore how to recognise and understand their own and others’ emotions, consider a range of real-life situations and develop the skills to respond in positive and thoughtful ways.
