  • Year 3 and 4 know their rights!

    Fri 13 Mar 2020

As part of the 2020 Sports Relief campaign years 3 and 4 came together to discuss their rights  Firstly studying the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, before putting some of them in order of importance.  Thinking about what would happen if these rights were taken away really made us reflect on how lucky we are to have such protections.  We then discussed the differences between rights, wants and needs and sorted discussion points into categories.

We all agreed that the rights we have, such as access to education, healthcare, play, rest and clean water are something we take for granted, and wont again!

  • Holly Nursery and Acorn Class have been keeping a careful eye on 12 eggs in the incubator this week. We were lucky enough to see chicks hatching.

  • Year 2 learn about 'Children's Rights'

    Fri 13 Mar 2020 P Foulkes
This week, as part of Sports Relief, the children in Maple and Cedar joined together to learn about the 'Rights of Children' as given from the UN Convention.  In small groups the children explored several of the 'rights' and discussed what it means to them.  They found out that we are very fortunate where we live as some rights such as, 'being given clean water,' is something we take for granted, whereas some children in countries such as Africa have to drink dirty water that is shared by both animals and humans!
  • Kenya brought to Life for KS1

    Fri 13 Mar 2020 P Foulkes
KS1 received a fabulous treat on Wednesday when Helen Davies, the auntie of Arya in Maple Class, came in to share her experiences of working in Africa and particularly in Kenya.  The children were all treated to some amazing photographs of animals in their natural habitats and stories that aroused the children's curiosity.  The number of children wanting to ask questions was immense and every child left wanting to learn more!  Helen has a website which you can look at at home to see some of the wonderful pictures that she shared with us.  It is 'rockmyadventure.com' Thank you for coming to talk to us Helen.
  • Forest School launch with Cedar Class

    Thu 12 Mar 2020 H.Arndt

This morning, Cedar Class launched our Forest School here in the Daniel Beamish Forest Garden at Lydiate Primary, led by Molly Toal, the Forest School Project Officer for the Lancashire Wildlife Trust. The children had a fantastic couple of hours. After an initial safety talk at the site of the fire pit, the children went on to enjoy a wealth of outdoor activities, which will be built upon over consecutive weeks.  We moved like insects, played hide and seek, participated in a treasure hunt, used trowels to dig in the mud, created a worm circus using sticks, dressed up and used magnifiers for closer observations. Such a buzz of excitement from the children as they created, initiated, shared, investigated, explored and cooperated. We are loving our learning in the Outdoors and can't wait for next Thursday when we do it all again! We'll keep you posted.
