Year 6 - Oak

Autumn Term 24/25

I am delighted to welcome your children to Oak Class.  Year 6 is a busy, but fun year with lots to do and learn.  Below will give you a flavour of what your children will be learning this term.

English

We are basing our writing around the book Holes. This is a great story with lots of twists and turns. the children will produce both some fiction and non fiction texts based on this!

Reading is so important and will feature every day in class. We will practice our speed reading, our reading fluency as well as our reading comprehension skills. This can all be supported by your child reading each night at home too.

We will also be building on our work on punctuation, grammar and spelling working hard on the dimensions of reading to prepare children for SATs.

Maths

We have completed some mini assessments and lessons will be steared towards misconceptions in various mathematical areas. In particular we will ensure that the 4 main operations are secure as are times tables. Please can you ensure your child uses TTRS for at least 3 minutes a day. Times tables are in most areas of the year 6 maths curriculum and it is vital your child can recall these quickly and accurately.

MFL

Building on the complicated vocabulary the children learned in last year, we will continue with some basic dialogue and greetings. The children will also practice listening to French conversation and translating into English.

Art

Oak will be using the modern art form of Graffiti to create a display of their own names before studying artist Käthe Kollwitz.

ICT

Oak class will be looking at coding this term as well as the history of Bletchley Park during WW2 and it's role in code breaking!

P.E.

Wednesday - Forest School

Thursdays - Dance
Fridays - Swimming

Homework:

Reading

As much as possible each night at home. Children can summarise their reading in their reading journals. These are to be handed into school every Tuesday.

Times Tables

TTRS at least 3 minutes per day. Year 6 are fairly strong with their times tables but unless they practice, this can easily be forgotten. 3 minutes a day is plenty!

SATs Companion

Weekly homework will be set on SATs Companion online. This will vary from maths, reading or grammar and punctuation.

Your child can also log into SATs companion at any time and look up most areas of the year 6 curriculum for any additional practice.

Thank you for your continued support,

Mr Zaim, Mrs Bowen and Mrs Londesborough
