Year 5/6 - Oak and Birch

Welcome to Summer 1!
We hope everyone had a lovely break and is ready for a busy and important half term. The children have returned with great focus and enthusiasm, and we are looking forward to a productive period of learning. This page provides an overview of what your child will be learning so you can continue to support and celebrate their progress at home.

English
This half term, both year groups will continue working through our spelling scheme, Spelling Shed, to further develop their spelling knowledge and accuracy.

Year 6 will be preparing for their upcoming SATs, with a focus on reading and grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Alongside this, they will begin our new class novel The Middler, which will inspire their writing. Pupils will focus on meeting end of Key Stage 2 expectations through carefully structured writing, rich vocabulary, and accurate grammar.

Year 5 will continue to develop their reading comprehension and writing skills, building confidence and preparing for the challenges of the Year 6 curriculum.

Mathematics
Year 6 will be focusing on preparing for their arithmetic and reasoning SATs papers. They will revisit key areas of the curriculum, consolidate their understanding, and practise applying their skills to a range of problem-solving and reasoning questions.

Year 5 will also revisit and strengthen key mathematical concepts, helping to build a solid foundation for the Year 6 curriculum. Across both year groups, there will be a strong focus on confidence, accuracy, and explaining mathematical thinking.

Science – Electricity
Children will learn about electricity, exploring how circuits work and identifying the components needed to make them function. They will investigate how to construct simple circuits, understand the role of switches, and explore how voltage can affect the brightness of bulbs and the speed of motors.

Geography – How Will Our World Look in the Future?
In Geography, children will explore how the world may change in the future. They will consider issues such as climate change, population growth, and sustainability, and think about how humans can protect and improve the planet for future generations.

PE
PE this half term includes:

Whole School Dance (Thursdays with Mr Glenn) – children will develop rhythm, coordination, and performance skills while working collaboratively to create and perform routines.

Athletics (Birch on Tuesdays and Oak on Mondays) – pupils will practise a range of athletic skills including running, jumping, and throwing, while developing technique, perseverance, and teamwork.

Music – Charanga
Children will continue working through their Charanga units, developing their listening and appraising skills as well as their ability to compose and notate music. They will explore different musical styles and continue building confidence in performance.

Art – Still Life
This half term, children will explore still life drawing and painting. They will develop their observational skills, focusing on shape, tone, and shading, and learn how to create detailed and proportionate artwork inspired by real-life objects.

Computing – Big Data 2
Children will build on their understanding of data by exploring the concept of big data. They will learn how large sets of data are collected, analysed, and used in the real world, while developing their critical thinking and digital literacy skills.

PSHE – Conception
This half term, children will learn about conception and the beginnings of human life in an age-appropriate way. Lessons will focus on understanding the biological process, as well as the importance of respect and responsibility. A letter with further information will be sent home.

RE – Is It Better to Express Religion Through Arts and Architecture or Through Charity and Generosity?
Children will explore different ways that people express their religious beliefs. They will consider whether it is more meaningful to show faith through creative expression, such as art and architecture, or through actions like charity and generosity.

French – The Planets
In French, children will learn about the planets while continuing to develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. They will build vocabulary and practise using simple sentences to describe and discuss space.

We are looking forward to a focused and successful half term, particularly for our Year 6 pupils as they approach their SATs. Thank you, as always, for your continued support.
