Year 5/6 - Oak and Birch
Welcome to Spring 1!
We hope everyone had a restful break and is ready for a fresh term of learning! It has been wonderful to see the children back at school, full of energy and curiosity. This term, we will be embracing the new season, exploring fresh topics and enjoying a range of exciting learning experiences. This page will give you an overview of what your child will be learning across different subjects so you can celebrate their progress and discoveries with them.
English
In Year 5, children are exploring Kensuke's Kingdom, developing their comprehension, character analysis, and ability to discuss themes and authorial choices. Year 6 are reading The Final Year, enhancing their understanding of narrative structure, character development, and key themes. Across both year groups, children are also enjoying a wide range of reading activities to build fluency, vocabulary, and confidence. They continue to practise planning, drafting, and editing their writing, while focusing on rich vocabulary, varied sentence structures, and accurate punctuation.
Mathematics
In Year 5, children are continuing to build their fluency in key number concepts, including multiplication, division, and the foundations for fractions and decimals. Year 6 are consolidating their understanding of number and place value while progressing through topics such as fractions, decimals, and percentages. Across both year groups, lessons focus on developing reasoning and problem-solving skills, helping children apply their knowledge in a variety of contexts. Times tables recall remains a key focus, supporting confidence and accuracy in all areas of maths. Children are making great progress through the curriculum, building on prior learning and developing the skills they need for more complex concepts later in the year.
Science – Evolution and Inheritance
We will explore how living things have changed over time, looking at inheritance, adaptation, and the work of key scientists such as Charles Darwin. Children will develop their understanding of how traits are passed down through generations and how species evolve to survive in their environments.
Geography – Protecting the EnvironmentThis term, children will explore ways to protect our environment and care for the planet. They will investigate local and global environmental issues, consider the impact of human activity on natural habitats, and explore practical solutions to help conserve resources. Children will also reflect on how they can make a difference in their own communities, linking their learning to real-world actions and current events.
PE
PE this term includes:
Teamwork with The Liverpool FC Foundation (Both classes on Tuesdays) – developing communication, group work and problem-solving.
Gymnastics (Oak on Mondays and Birch on Thursdays) – children will develop their balance, strength, and flexibility through a variety of gymnastics activities. They will practise sequences of movements, explore different ways to travel and shape their bodies, and work on control and precision in their performances.
Music - The Fresh Prince of Bel AirThis term, both Birch and Oak classes are enjoying The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, developing their singing, rhythm, and performance skills. In addition to singing, children are exploring composition, creating their own musical ideas and experimenting with different sounds. They are also listening to and appraising a range of music, learning to identify key features such as pitch, tempo, and dynamics, and discussing how music can convey mood and meaning.
Art – Make My Voice Heard
This term, children will explore the theme “Make My Voice Heard” through graffiti art. They will study the techniques used in street art, including colour, lettering, and composition, and use these to create their own artworks that express ideas, opinions, and messages in a bold and creative way.
Computing – DataThis term, children will be learning about data and how it can be collected, organised, and interpreted. They will explore ways to represent information clearly and use simple coding tools to analyse and present data, developing problem-solving and logical thinking skills along the way.
PSHE – Conception
This term, children will be learning about conception and the beginnings of human life. Lessons will focus on understanding the biological process in an age-appropriate way, while also exploring the importance of respect, responsibility, and healthy relationships.
RE – What Do Religions Say When Life Gets Hard?
This term, children will explore how different religions offer guidance and support during difficult times. They will learn about beliefs, teachings, and practices that help people cope with challenges, and reflect on how these ideas can relate to their own lives.
French – Vikings
This term, children will continue to develop their French language skills through the theme of Vikings. They will learn new vocabulary, practise speaking and listening, and explore simple reading and writing tasks, using their language skills to describe people, places, and events connected to Viking life.
