Lydiate Primary and Nursery School

Inspire. Achieve. Prepare for life.

Year 3/4 - Elm + Poplar

Year 3/4 - Spring 2024

Welcome to our class page. The adults working in Year 3 and 4 are:

Mr Zaim, Mrs Foulkes, Mrs Bowen, Mrs Caddick and Mrs Diaz

.

English

We love our reading at Lydiate Primary School and we love to use books as a stimulus for our writing. Year three and four will be working on improving their handwriting as well as incorporating expanded noun phrases, conjuctions and adverbials within their writing and building upon prior learning since September.

As ever, we will have our dedicated library time each week. The more children can read at home, the more this will support the work we do in school. Why not become a member of the The Meadows library services?

Maths

We will begin our day with morning maths. It is imperative that your child is punctual each day so as not to miss vital maths arithmetic skills. We will be working hard on our multiplication and division skills. Please can you ensure your child is practising their times tables via TTRS at least 3 times per week.

In year 3 we will be learning about: 2d and 3d shapes, addition and subtraction, fractions, postition and direction and time.

In year 4 we will be learning about: Multiplication and division, place value, shape and position and statistics.

Science

Our next topic is The Digestive SystemThe children will be learning about the different parts of the digestive system as well as how to care and look after our teeth.

History

We will be learning about Roman Britain. The children will explore why the Romans wanted to invade Britain using a variety of primary and secondary resources.

Art and Design Technology

In art we are creating optical illusions, applying tints to recreate a traditional design style as well as replicating the style of the artist Paul Cezanne.

In DT, the children will be making their own bread. They will taste different types of bread before designing, making and evaluating their own loaf!

Music

In Music, we are listening to and appraising American music. We will learn
the rhythms of this style of music and then re-create it by composing our
own version.

PE

Elm class will begin their swimming lessons this half term on Fridays. Elm will continue with Tag Rugby on a Tuesday. Poplar class will be continuing Tag Rugby as well as making bridges in gymnastics! .

Correct PE kits must be worn for all PE lessons. Children are expected to come into school dressed in their PE kits on their allocated days.

Poplar Class - Thursday and Friday

Elm Class- Tuesday and Friday

R.E.

In R.E. we will be studying Christianity and exploring what it’s like to be a
Christian in Britain today. Through this topic we will be looking at how
Christians support the local community and why it’s right to stand up for
injustice, by looking at the story of Rosa Parks.

Homework

All children in Year 3 and Year 4 are expected to read at least 3 times per week at home as well as accessing Times Tables Rockstars online at least 3 times per week. Login details will be given to all children again but these will be the same details as in previous years. If you are new to our school, a new account has been created for you.

When listening to your child read, we would kindly ask you to write a comment in your child's reading record. The children can swap their books as soon as they have finished.

We will collect all reading records in on a Tuesday in school. Please make sure your child has it in their bag every day just to help set a good routine.

Thanks for your support. We are looking forward to a great year in school.
