Year 5/6 - Oak, Birch and Sycamore

Autumn term 2021

Welcome back everyone. It is so nice to see all our children in school. My haven't they grown... Welcome to Mrs Griffin working in Oak class.

English

We are beginning our year by using an amazing book, Kensuke's Kingdom. This is a fantastic adventure story which we will use as a stimulus for our own writing. The main character is from Japan and this will link with our art and geography units this term.

Maths

We will begin each day with our basic arithmetic skills. These fluency skills really do build a strong foundation to tricky word problems. We will be covering place value and the four operations this term. Please help your child be ensuring they practice their times tables. It will make everything else that little bit easier for them.

Science

We look forward to studying 'Light' a particular favourite of a certain Year 6 teacher. We will also be looking at properties and change in materials too.

Geography

Linking in with our class novel, we will be studying Japan in Georgraphy and making comparisons with our own locality.

Music

Get ready for Bon Jovi (Sycamore and Birch)! Oak class will be rocking out to Happy! this half term!

Art / D.T.

Linked again to our English novel, we will be learning about the art of origami. Folding skills at the ready!

P.E.

All classes will be covering gymnastics this term as we are able to continue with our indoor provision. Birch and Sycamore classes will also be covering netball. Oak class will be swimming this half term. Birch class will swim after the October half term and Sycamore class will swim in the New Year. Please ensure correct PE kit is worn for all PE lessons. The children can come to school wearing their PE kit on their selected day.

SMSC

We love exploring the units on 1Decision. They are giving the children a good insight into the world and offering advice on how to conduct themselves as good and honest citizens, whilst keeping themselves safe at all times.

Thank you for your continued support,

Mr Zaim, Mrs Foulkes, Mr Forbes, Mrs Bond and Mrs Griffin.
