Year 3/4 - Elm and Poplar

Welcome Back from Mrs Allen, Miss Smith, Miss Arndt and Mrs Bowen.

Year 3 and 4 - Autumn Term 2021.

Welcome to Miss Rusling who will be working in Elm class this term.

In the first term of Autumn we will be exploring a number of different texts including The Secret of Black Rock by Joe Stanton Escape From Pompeii by Christina Balit.  We will explore these texts to improve our reading comprehension skills and use them as a catalyst for exciting writing tasks.

Children will continue to do daily 'morning maths' activities remembering previous learning and practising new skills and will develop their understanding of place value, fractions, measure and the four main operations in a variety of engaging, and exciting ways. This will be supported with weekly homework, and Times Table Rockstars.

Our first science topic of the school year will be states of matter where children will learn about solids and liquids and gases and plan some of their own investigations to explore the properties of these. They will explore man made and natural materials and compare and describe the different types of rocks.  Linked to our Romans topic, they will talk about volcanoes and look at how the Romans developed the use of different materials to help them thrive.

This term, the children in year 3 and 4 will be taking part in a cross-curricular history based topic 'The Romans'. As well as learning about the timeline of this fascinating part of our history, children will learn what it would take to survive and thrive here. They will look at the archaeological finds and historical evidence that informs us how people used to live and use historical records to sort fact from fiction. They will complete some art work on volcanoes, linked to Pompeii.

All children in year 3 and 4, will receive their spelling list from their teacher on a Friday. They will be copied, or stuck into the homework books that the children take home with them. These words will then be tested 2 weeks later on the Friday.

Year 3 and 4 children are expected to read at least three times a week at home and there will be some times tables homework too. Children will receive their TTRS login details in the first few weeks and are encouraged to play this as often as they can.

We would like to inform parents that the Upper School gate will be open to receive Year 3 and 4 pupils at 8.40am  No responsibility is accepted for pupils arriving before that time. Classes will commence each day at 8:55am. Children should have their reading books, reading record and water bottle every day.

Classes end each day at 3.10pm. Children in the Lower School will be escorted to the appropriate entrance and directed to the person in charge of picking them up. Please ensure you do not cross over the yellow line outside the school gate and under no circumstances enter the yard.

Thanks for your support. We are looking forward to a great year in school.
