Year 1/2 - Cedar and Maple
Autumn Term 2021
We hope everyone had a lovely break over Summer. We hope this new academic year holds many exciting adventures and learning opportunities for Cedar and Maple. We are so excited to welcome in our brand new Year 1's and also our returning Year 2's who have switched classes. We are sure that they will hit the ground running and get back into routine quickly. Let's take a look at what we will be learning this term.
In Maths this term we will be starting looking into Number and Place Value up to 100 and ensuring both classes have a good understanding of number. To help at home you could start doing some counting games with your children including counting in 1's, 2's, 5's and 10's. If your child is in Year 2 you could start to look at counting in 3's aswell. In English we will be looking at building effective sentences through our story this term which is Grandad's Island. We will have a big focus on capital letters, finger spaces and full stops to start with. Our Year 2's will be stretched further by looking into adding conjunctions within their writing.
In Science we will be learning all about Materials. We will be learning about different types of materials, where we can find materials, what certain materials can be made into etc. It should be a really fun unit. We cannot wait to share some of the amazing artwork the children produce this year with you. We will be developing our drawing skills through our new 'Fire' topic. The children will be using different marks to create a variety of Fire pictures.
This links to our History topic where we will be taking an adventure through time; all the way back to 1666. The Great Fire of London will be the focus of our first half term. We will be learning about how the fire started, how it spread, how long it lasted and even more. This will be an exciting unit and we cannot wait to see how much the children can remember by the end of it.
In P.E. we will be developing running, dodging and gymnastics skills, while in computing we immerse ourselves in the exciting world of programming, using programmable toys and the free-to-download visual programming application, Scratch. You can support your child by downloading this at home too. PSHE concentrates on building friendships.
As always, if you have any questions, we would be more than happy to speak to you. We hope your child enjoys their learning as much as we enjoy our teaching!
